ARB Reform Group

2009 Election statement

Derek Salter

I stand as an Architects Reform Group candidate for a second term.

Having gained valuable experience over the past three years on the Board, I have a thorough understanding of the workings of ARB and how decisions taken by the Board can impact upon the profession.

I therefore stand again with the resolve to continue to hold ARB to its core function as set out in the Architects Act.

As a Past President of the Association of Consultant Architects and as a principal in private practice, I believe that the realities and difficulties encountered by architects on a daily basis must be constantly expressed to ensure that ARB only acts in a minimalist, prudent and unintrusive manner.

The originally intended role of ARB was, in my view, registration, not regulation and ARB must be constrained to this.  I aim to ensure there is no unnecessary bureaucracy and cost.  The work of the Board must be open and accountable and its decisions proportionate.

The Reform Group has worked with the Board over the past three years to bring about a number of positive changes.  Even though the elected architect Board members are in the minority, to the best of our ability this has been achieved by the strength of a group with a common vision.

If you elect all of the Reform Group members who are currently standing you will see further lasting changes over the course of the next three years
