ARB Reform Group

2009 Election statement

Mark Benzie

I am a candidate with the ARB Reform Group, firmly resolved to maintain a minimalist ARB

and to reduce its bureaucracy and fees accordingly.

As a regulator of title, not function, we have to be vigilant that ARB’s activities are proportionate, do not unduly burden architects and compliment those of our professional bodies.  Since being elected as a Board Member in 2006 I have campaigned on issues that are important to architects and, by working constructively with staff and the Board, have helped to achieve:

  • An ARB that is more open and accountable

  • More architects on committees

  • Halted duplication of CPD with ARB’s monitoring of competence

  • Abolished duplication of company registration fees

  •  A move towards a possible outsourcing of ARB exams, with the aim of reducing costs and ensuring the process is independent

  • Agreement with the Board that the Professional Conduct Committee should be independent of Board Members

  • Commenced a review of directories, with the aim of removing and prosecuting title abuse

If elected, I hope to continue my work on the Finance Committee and focus on reviewing

activities and ceasing those that are ineffective:

  • Ceasing PII monitoring

  • Curbing excessive communication and promotion of ARB

  • Reducing the number of Board meetings and paying reduced allowances for part day attendance at meetings

I am an RIAS and RIBA member and sole practitioner.

Please elect all seven Reform Group candidates: Ruth Brennan, Colin Brock, Andrew Mortimer, George Oldham, Derek Salter, Bernard Wyld and myself to help achieve further reform on your behalf.
